IPL 2021 was a great one for Rishabh Pant as captain. Even though he failed to take the team to the final, he captained the entire tournament with great care. This was the reason that Delhi secured their place in the playoffs while topping the points table. Although the team got two chances to reach the final, first Chennai Super Kings and then Kolkata Knight Riders broke Pant’s dream. Despite all this, two former Indian players Virender Sehwag and Ashish Nehra believe that Delhi should hand over the command of the team to Pant in the next season also and show faith in this young captain.
Talking to Cricbuzz, Nehra said, “Delhi Capitals should retain Pant as captain. The more he plays, the better he will be. There is no doubt about this. The sooner he learns, the better it will be for him and the team. If we remove some of the mistakes made by Pant, his performance as a captain has been excellent. Not everyone can be MS Dhoni, who came in 2007 and won the T20 World Cup as soon as he came. Give Pant a little chance to improve.
Sehwag said that Pant should be retained and he can play for the Delhi Capitals for the next 10 years like Virat Kohli. He said, ‘Pant must be retained. He is the future and can play for Delhi Capitals for the next 10 years just like Virat Kohli played for Bangalore. The call on captaincy can be taken next year when the team is finalised. If he has a better option then he should go with him or else then Pant.
